Skin Cysts / scalp cyst / pilar cysts Scalp cysts, also known as Pilar cysts are common, occurring in about 5-10% of the population. Great majority of these cysts occur on the scalp, but they can occur elsewhere in the body as well. Pilar cysts are the second most frequent type of cyst on the head and neck and scalp. These cysts are almost always benign and not cancerous. Scalp cysts can be familial and occur across different members of the same family. Scalp cysts contain a byproduct of normal skin, known as "keratin". Keratin is contained in a small balloon like structure, known as the wall of the cyst. The cysts can vary in size and location and number.
Pilar cysts occur preferentially in areas with dense hair follicle concentration. Almost 90% of these cysts occur on the scalp. In about 30% of cases, there is only one cyst in the scalp, and 70% of patients have multiple cysts.
Cause of pilar cyst is unknown.
Some individuals may only have one during their lifetime, others may
constantly battle with new cysts that form under their skin. treatment for scalp and other skin cysts: Since these cysts are located under the skin, the only treatment is to open the skin with a very small incision and extract the cyst in its entirety. This is a very simple procedure and takes about 20 minutes to complete. Patients should avoid taking aspirin or Motrin or any other anti-inflammatory drugs one week before the procedure. I numb the skin with lidocaine and make a small incision to remove the cysts. Once this is accomplished, the skin will usually require 1-2 stitches to close and heal nicely. The procedure will leave a minor mark on the skin. The actual cyst is sent to the pathology laboratory for microscopic examination.
